ISBN hyphenator
Format ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 with standard hyphen placement using International ISBN Agency range rules. Handy for title verso pages, press releases, and cover layouts.
Hyphens are for people to read. Scanners and databases use the digits only. You can also strip hyphens in bulk.
How ISBN hyphenation works
An unhyphenated ISBN-13 is a 13-digit string. Proper hyphens split it into five elements: GS1 prefix (978 or 979), registration group, registrant (publisher), publication (title), and check digit. Group and publisher lengths vary by territory and catalog size.
